How to Choose Pendant Lighting

Choosing the right pendant comes down to scale, hanging height, spacing and the type of light you want in the room. Use the guidelines below as a starting point, then check the individual fixture dimensions before ordering.

Choose the Right Pendant Size

Start with the width of the pendant at its widest point and the size of the surface below it. A single pendant can carry more visual weight, while multiple pendants generally work better at a smaller scale. Leave enough open space around each fixture so the arrangement feels balanced rather than crowded.

How High Should Pendant Lights Hang Over a Kitchen Island?

Over most kitchen islands and counters, 30 to 36 inches from the countertop to the bottom of the pendant is a useful starting range. Keep sightlines in mind and check the fixture's minimum and maximum overall height before ordering, especially with high, vaulted or sloped ceilings.

How Many Pendant Lights Do You Need?

The right number depends on both the length of the island and the size of the fixtures. Two larger pendants may suit the same space as three smaller ones.

For two pendants, placing their centres roughly at the quarter points of the island can create an even layout. With three, centre one fixture and position the outer two evenly on either side. Larger shades need more breathing room, so consider fixture width rather than relying on one fixed spacing measurement.

Choose the Right Shade and Light Distribution

Shade design affects how a pendant lights the room. Clear or translucent glass allows more light into the surrounding space, while frosted or opal glass creates a softer, more diffused glow. Opaque or open-bottom shades tend to direct more light downward, which can work well over prep and dining surfaces.

A pendant should suit the space visually, but it should also provide the type of light you actually need.
